Interventional Radiology (IR) is a rapidly growing subspecialty within Radiology which offers minimally invasive treatments as alternatives to major surgery. At Lake Smit & Partners we have a team of fellowship trained doctors who offer these treatments and are always available to offer an opinion to any patient who may be a suitable candidate.
Many of our IR treatments are new and innovational and may not be offered as an option by other specialists- this is why we recognize the importance of social media in increasing the exposure of this field to the general public. Our greatest frustration is finding out about patients who have undergone dangerous surgery for a condition that could have been cured with a simpler, safer alternative treatment.
The range of conditions we treat is vast, and grows by the day, but the most commonly performed include:
- Uterine artery embolization for patients with fibroids
- Neuro-interventional treatments for intracranial aneurysm
- Venous access for patients requiring ports or dialysis catheters
- Targeted treatments for patients with liver cancer (e.g. ablation and radioembolization)
In addition there are several new techniques such as prostate artery embolization to treatment men with BPH (enlarged prostate) and thrombectomy to treat patients presenting with a sudden stroke.
