Cancer Ablation

What is it?

Image guided ablation is a relatively new treatment modality for patients with cancer. There are numerous target areas but lesions within the lung, liver and kidneys are the most commonly treated.

In our practice in Durban, we currently offer Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and microwave ablation (MWA).

How does it work?

Using a needle through the skin, in RFA, high-frequency electrical currents are passed through an electrode in the needle, creating a small area of heat. In MWA, microwaves are created from the needle to create the heat. The heat is aimed at destroying cancer cells.

What are the advantages?

Being minimally invasive, RFA and MWA are effective treatment options for patients who struggle with surgery. They are also quick and accurate (using imaging guidance), resulting in a faster recover and less risks than open surgery.
